Advisor Profile: John W. Franks



John W. Franks– The son of a volunteer fireman, John practically grew up at the firehouse. He now has over 30 years of public safety service in his own right.

After serving in the United States Army and United States Army Reserve as an airborne combat medic, John graduated from Wake Technical Community College with a degree in emergency medical science. He served as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) for a decade with various Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies and rescue squads in Durham and Wake Counties, NC.

John served with Six Forks Rescue Squad in Raleigh, NC and the Rescue Extrication Delivery Specialists (REDS) Team in Garner, NC and has extensive rescue training and experience.

John previously volunteered as a firefighter and first responder with Wake-New Hope and Six Forks Fire Departments in Raleigh. John is currently a Captain with the Warrenton Rural Volunteer Fire Department in Warren County, NC. He is certified in Hazardous Materials Level-1, will complete his North Carolina Firefighter-II certification very soon, and is working on his North Carolina Technical Rescuer certifications.

John has worked for over 25 years at the Raleigh-Wake County Emergency (9-1-1) Communications Center in Raleigh, NC.

In 2010, John became an Associate Advisor of Fire Explorer Post 672 because his step-son was an Explorer; he became the Chief Advisor in 2013. He is also a member on the Post 672 Executive Committee. John has completed the Exploring training courses in Youth Protection Training (YPT), Post Advisor Training, Post Committee Member Training, and Exploring Ride-Along Safety.

Josh “Heavy Duty” Terry – A native of Warren County, Josh has been a member of various public safety agencies. He currently volunteers as a firefighter and first responder with the Norlina Volunteer Fire Department and Soul City Volunteer Fire Department.

Josh was a member of Fire Explorer Post 672 from 2012-16 and earned his North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) while he was still an Explorer! 

Since graduating high school, Josh has volunteered as an EMT with the Warren County Rescue Squad, and worked for Eastern Medical Transport in Roanoke Rapids, Northampton County EMS, Franklin County EMS, and is currently working for the Vance County Sheriff's Office.

In 2016, Josh became an adult Associate Advisor for Fire Explorer Post 672 when he turned 21. He has completed the Exploring training course in Youth Protection Training (YPT).
